Since creator George RR Martin wrote the first novel in his expansive A Song of Ice and Fire series, A Game of Thrones, he included countless mysteries and unanswered questions, many of which confound fans of the novels to this day. While he had never given any sort of explanation for Hodor, the huge, hulking caretaker of Bran Stark and his inability to say anything other than “Hodor,” most of his fans rarely put any real thought into it. While Martin never treated Hodor as a joke, many readers, and later fans of the HBO series, did. As HBO kicked off the sixth season of their epic TV series based on Martin’s books, it was the first season to not be directly drawing from material written in the novels.
One bit of information that Martin did give to the producers was the meaning of “Hodor,” and thanks to Bran wandering around time with the Three-Eyed Crow, viewers were able to witness the true, tragic origin of Hodor, and learn exactly what Hodor means. Not only was Hodor actually saying “hold the door” this whole time, but the entire reason he was only capable of saying that one word was because of Bran. The tragedy, and incredible heroism, of Hodor’s life hit hard, as did his death, and Hodor did what he always said that he would do, he held the door. Many fans reacted with shock and sadness, while others… make jokes. Okay, they were funny jokes, but it’s still sad people!
